Keep Paying Forward
Kelvin became an engineer after graduation. In 2018, he decided to give up a promotion opportunity in his previous company and joined the fellowship instead.
//Reasons For Joining Fellowship//
“When I worked in the engineering field, I came across many seniors who were older than me. They tend to be conservative towards changes, or perhaps they believe they are no longer capable of making changes. However, when it comes to their children, they do have expectations for the next generation. The seniors even asked me to tutor their children for the sake of public examinations. Although they always say it is impossible to change, I can feel that deep down they want to make a change.”Kelvin described himself as "a sacrificial pawn". He always does more but thinks less. He does not care much about gain and loss. "I think this personality is probably the reason why I joined the Fellowship," he laughed.It will not make a big difference if there is one more environmental engineer in Hong Kong. Nonetheless, if there is one more pragmatic environmental engineer in Hong Kong who is willing to work together to make changes, it will lead to a big difference in Hong Kong. “After years of working experience, I have become more humble and realised that the power of an individual is very small. Having said that, when you can influence one or even two people around you who also have aspirations for society, the power combined could be tremendous.”
//If One Of The Goals Of The Fellowship Is To Influence Students Through Passionate Fellows, Kelvin Should Be The Student Who Has Changed Most.//
The criticism from a TFHK Leadership Development Officer (LDO) made him realise his blind spot in teaching and he needed to be more student-centred.Each fellow was asked to organise their own extra-curricular activities (ECA) and life-planning activities (LCE) after starting teaching. Kelvin organised an ECA visit to an IT company, aiming to let students who are interested in IT get a taste of the work. They went to Kelvin's previous company. Kelvin recalled that Karen was very concerned about how much the students would gain out of the visit. Karen also worked very hard to be the facilitator in the visit. He joked that he was a little bit envy of Karen at that time because she was more concerned for his students than he was. At that moment, Kelvin realised that all the TFHK fellows shall observe the same rule -- caring about the students' needs and learning. With a year of fellowship, Kelvin learnt that every student is unique and special in their own way and he should not expect to change them in the same manner. The role of a Teaching Fellow is to guide the students to their path together. This understanding has inspired him ever since. At OUHK, he works as a teacher trainer and also keeps in touch with the students, who have graduated from secondary school. They have become friends with each other.As for Ada Yip, who was his mentor during the Fellowship, has become Kelvin's friend as well. Whenever Kelvin needs help for work or life, Ada will always give Kelvin insight and advice through daily conversation.
//If You Could Say Something To Someone Interested In Applying For Fellowship In The Coming Year, What Would It Be?//
I didn't think too much when I applied for the Fellowship. All I believed was that I was going to do my best to reach out to students, talk to them and help them during this year of Fellowship. If you have a passion for the program, just do it! Don't wait!
